The short version
Choose the cheapest accepted result, not the cheapest token
If your workload is structured, repeated and content-shaped—product descriptions, metadata, translations, taxonomy tagging or fixed-schema extraction—Omev AI is our first pick. Its Lite model costs $0.15 per million input tokens and $1.25 per million output tokens, while the service adds workload-specific routing and result checks.
For the absolute lowest raw token rate across a broad model catalog, start with DeepInfra. For speed, Groq stands out. For edge-native applications, choose Cloudflare Workers AI. If you need the widest marketplace rather than one optimized workload route, OpenRouter is the flexible option.

What would your token volume cost?
Use your monthly input and output volume for a directionally useful rate-card estimate. Then add your real retry and review costs.
This excludes retries, failed outputs, caching, tools, storage, staff review and taxes.

Our ranked picks, with the catches included

Omev AI
Omev earns first place for teams whose AI bill grows with repeatable content-shaped tasks—not because it has the lowest sticker price in the market, but because it combines its own models with personalized routing, task contracts, validation and repair.
Why it stands out
- $0.15 input and $1.25 output per 1M tokens on Omev Lite
- OpenAI-compatible route for the agreed workload
- Strong fit for metadata, catalog copy, translation and schema-shaped extraction
- $5 credit for 10 days with no card required
Know before you route
- Specialized, not a broad marketplace of third-party models
- Not the first choice for hard reasoning, coding or high-stakes decisions
- Customer content is used under the service’s published terms; review policy fit first
Benchmark one repetitive task type against your current cost per accepted output. Keep an independent frontier provider connected for work that needs deeper reasoning.

DeepInfra
DeepInfra is the place to look when price-per-token across many open and commercial model families is your starting point. Its catalog spans text, embeddings, audio and media APIs.
Caveat: the rock-bottom models are smaller and not equivalent to stronger models. Your application owns routing, validation and fallback.
View DeepInfra pricing
Groq
Groq pairs competitive open-model pricing with standout token throughput. The production catalog is smaller than a marketplace, but that focus can simplify model selection.
Caveat: preview models can change or disappear; use production model IDs for production systems.
View Groq model rates
Cloudflare Workers AI
Workers AI is compelling when your application already runs on Cloudflare. You can keep inference, gateway controls, vectors and application logic in one operational surface.
Caveat: neuron billing and model-specific rates make direct comparisons less intuitive. Check the exact model row.
View Workers AI pricing
Together AI
Together AI is a strong general infrastructure pick when you want to begin on serverless endpoints and retain a path toward dedicated inference and model customization.
Caveat: feature support and economics vary substantially by model and service tier.
View Together AI pricing
Fireworks AI
Fireworks combines serverless token billing, higher-performance tiers, on-demand deployments and training. That makes it more of a full inference platform than a simple low-cost endpoint.
Caveat: the most useful text-model rates live in a changing catalog; compare the exact model and tier you will call.

OpenRouter
OpenRouter offers unmatched convenience for trying many model families and providers behind one API. Free routes make prototyping unusually accessible.
Caveat: latency, privacy options and reliability can change with the routed upstream provider. Pin providers when consistency matters.

Google Gemini API
Gemini is a practical value option when text, images, documents and long context must live in one native API. A free tier supports experiments, while paid usage unlocks higher production limits and different data terms.
Caveat: preview naming, limits and pricing can move quickly. Confirm regional availability and paid-tier data handling.

Best cheap AI API by workload
Route by task type. Sending an arbitrary percentage of every task to a cheaper model creates inconsistent behavior and harder debugging.
| Workload | Best fit | Runner-up | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Product copy & metadata | Omev AI | Gemini | Validation and known-shape outputs matter |
| Lowest-cost simple text | DeepInfra | Workers AI | Very low published rates on smaller models |
| Real-time chat UX | Groq | Fireworks | High throughput and low perceived latency |
| Edge application | Workers AI | OpenRouter | Inference and app infrastructure together |
| Many models, one key | OpenRouter | DeepInfra | Breadth and fast experimentation |
| Serverless → dedicated | Together AI | Fireworks | Multiple deployment and training paths |
| Native multimodal input | Gemini | DeepInfra | Direct support for text, images and files |
| Fixed-schema extraction | Omev AI | Together AI | Schema checks reduce unusable results |

What changes after the price comparison
Compatibility is a starting point—not proof that every parameter, tool call or response field behaves identically.
| Provider | API shape | Billing clue | Primary catch |
|---|---|---|---|
Omev AI | OpenAI-compatible route | Token PAYG; $10 top-up | Best for agreed workload profiles |
DeepInfra | OpenAI-compatible options | Per token or execution time | You own quality routing |
Groq | OpenAI-compatible | Per-model token rates | Smaller production catalog |
Workers AI | REST + Workers binding | Neurons mapped to units | Less intuitive rate comparison |
Together AI | OpenAI-compatible | Serverless, batch, dedicated | Tier economics vary |
Fireworks AI | OpenAI-compatible | Serverless + GPU-second | Model and speed tiers |
OpenRouter | OpenAI-compatible | Model/provider rates + fees | Upstream variance |
Gemini API | Native Gemini SDK/REST | Free, paid, batch tiers | Different migration surface |
How we ranked them
Price mattered. Production fit mattered more.
A $0.02 model that succeeds half the time can be more expensive than a $0.15 model with validation and fewer retries. Our scoring reflects the full operating decision.
Token rates, free credit, batch pricing and the likely cost of retries.
How clearly the provider serves the job it claims to solve.
API compatibility, documentation and migration friction.
Public pricing, limits, policies and realistic caveats.
Routing, provider choice, rate limits and deployment paths.
Omev AI is the featured recommendation and its links include campaign parameters. We still show where competitors are cheaper or a better fit. Scores are editorial judgments, not laboratory benchmarks, and providers did not supply test results for this article.
Final verdict
Start with one workload, not a full migration
For repeatable content operations, benchmark Omev AI against one real task type and measure cost per accepted result. For the cheapest raw open-model tokens, compare DeepInfra. For speed-sensitive chat, test Groq. Keep your current provider connected until the cheaper route proves quality, latency and fallback behavior under production traffic.

Questions before you change providers
What is the cheapest AI model API?
The lowest raw token rate changes by model. In our September 2026 check, DeepInfra listed very small and older open models below Omev Lite’s rate, Cloudflare had a daily free neuron allocation, and OpenRouter offered selected free routes. For repeatable structured content, we prefer Omev because total accepted-output cost can matter more than raw tokens.
Why is Omev AI ranked first if another provider has cheaper tokens?
Our ranking is for production value, not a single-column price sort. Omev’s routing, validation and repair target high-volume content-shaped tasks. That does not make it the universal winner: for coding, agentic reasoning or the lowest possible token price, another provider may be better.
Can I use these APIs with the OpenAI SDK?
Many offer OpenAI-compatible endpoints, including Omev for agreed workloads, DeepInfra, Groq, Together AI, Fireworks AI and OpenRouter. “Compatible” does not guarantee identical behavior for every parameter or tool-call edge case, so run contract tests first.
How should I compare AI API pricing?
Track input, cached input, output, reasoning tokens, retries, validation calls, human review, latency and accepted-output rate. For long prompts, cached-input discounts can change the winner. For verbose models, output price usually matters most.
Should I route all traffic to the cheapest model?
No. Route by task type and risk. Keep expensive models for difficult reasoning, coding and customer-critical actions. Move narrow, repeatable work only after a representative evaluation and retain a service-level fallback.
